Natural Light: The Newlyn School

This 10-session course explores the artists who shaped London during the late 20th century. Join Andrew Davies to learn about John Betjeman and London conservation, followed by an afternoon walk around Bedford Park. In the second session, Frank Woodgate delves into the world of Freud, Bacon and the London School, with a visit to Tate Britain. Explore the work of Lee Miller and Roland Penrose with Antony Penrose. Discover London fashions in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s with Mary Alexander, and enjoy a visit to the V&A in the afternoon. Frank Woodgate takes a look at the Turner Prize, complete with a trip to Tate Britain, and Daniel Snowman explores the cultural impact of the Hitler émigrés. Raymond Warburton charts the rise of Pop Art on both sides of the Atlantic, with a visit to Tate Britain. Uncover the story of the Lansdowne Club, and the art of 1935, with Pamela Campbell-Johnson, which includes a guided tour of the eponymous venue. Barry Venning delves into the history of the Saatchi Gallery, followed by a guided visit. The final session is given by Colin Davies, who explores the architecture of late-20th- century London, complete with an architecture walk.

Clare Ford-Wille gives insight into the art and architecture of Baroque Europe, and Paula Nuttall uncovers the functions of Italian Renaissance buildings. Finally, Anne Anderson reveals how England’s ancient buildings have inspired 19th-century architects, and highlights how Victorian buildings have shaped modern styles.
