Falmouth gets a 'facelift'

When TAS Falmouth reconvenes in September an exciting new visual identity will be unveiled.  While Cornwall has long been associated with art, the opportunity to collaborate with Tom Holland, a Penryn-based contemporary artist, generated meaningful links to our location and to our ethos.  His 2021 painting ‘Queen Mary Gardens, Gyllyngvase, Falmouth’, (pictured), will feature on our website and promotional material.  

Tom’s inspiration comes from the land which surrounds him and his love of colour, shape, form and line.  Queen Mary Gardens opened in 1912 to commemorate the coronation of the wife of George V, and we are fortunate that our venue is a short walk away – tucked behind the horizontal blue and white ‘box’. 

There are references to the renowned ‘quality of light’ that has drawn so many artists to the region, here made modern in a vibrant pink sky.  Contemporary buildings sit alongside Cornish cottages and the tropical foliage, shoreline and distant hills draw attention to the varied topography found nearby.  Landscape has been at the centre of Cornish art since the 19th century; Tom’s painting respects that tradition but updates it for the 21st century. 

Our association with Tom is an excellent example of how we engage with our neighbourhood in the promotion of all the arts.  As our new visual identity “Queen Mary Gardens” communicates not only a sense of place but also how we see ourselves – at the heart of a vibrant, creative community.
