TAS Driffield Wolds visit to Aldby Park

A fully-subscribed visit to Aldby Park, at Buttercrambe near York took place on August 15th. This was part of our programme of day visits in lieu of our usual extended annual tour and has proved very popular particularly as some of the venues are not normally open to the public.

The fine Georgian Manor was built in 1725 for the Darley family, renowned for introducing the Arabian horse from which most of the world’s thoroughbred racehorses are descended. A lifesize painting of this horse hangs in the entrance hall. After a prolonged period of neglect following requisition during the war, it has been fully refurbished and is now a truly lived-in family home of the Winn-Darley’s. The gardens contain the site of King Edwin's moated castle.

After the house and garden tour, there was a fine lunch at the Three Cups, Stamford Bridge.

Our next visit is to Boynton Hall in October.
