Visit To Pallant House Gallery and Chichester Cathedral
17 Mar 2023
On Wednesday 15th March 2023 about 35 members of the Horsham branch of the Arts Society went by coach to visit the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester followed by a guided tour of the Cathedral.
The Pallant House gallery holds a large collection of modern British art. This covers a huge range from portraits and landscapes to abstract pieces. On this occasion we went for a special exhibition of Sussex art entitled ‘Sussex Landscape; Chalk, Wood and Water’. Many beautiful paintings and photographs executed in different styles. We had an introductory talk and viewed the exhibition in the modern extension to the lovely Queen Anne House that houses the original collection. There was also time to view the rest of the collection on display in the old and elegant house.
We explored Chichester for lunch and met at the Cathedral for a fascinating lecture on the history – ancient, and modern of the art works that have been placed in the building. These modern pieces include a Chagall window; items by John Piper, Graham Sutherland and John Skelton; and a memorial to Gustav Holst.
