TAS Kington Langley First lecture of 2024-2025 Season Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920, Dr Amy Lim

Our first lecture of the season was given by Dr Amy Lim, a researcher on the exhibition “Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain, 1520–1920’ which ran at Tate Britain until 13th October 2024. The exhibition showed the work of over 100 women artists who battled against societies expectations to become professional artists.

A Lecture by Pepe Martinez on 9 October 2024 @ The Arts Society Horsham

In this visually stimulating lecture, Pepe Martinez guided us on a kind of psychedelic journey from The Capitol Theatre in Horsham to the Subway of New York, the streets of London, Paris and Berlin.  We got to know the lingo, the history and the techniques of graffiti art and the names that rose to fame such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat whose death at aged 27 bestowed his iconic status.

The Wallace and Frick Collections and their link with Knole

After the summer break, members of The Arts Society Horsham were eager to start their new membership year and were treated to a most fascinating lecture on two major international art collections: the Wallace Collection at Hertford House, London and the Frick Collection in New York.  The lecturer Hilary Williams, illustrated their intriguing connections and their link to Knole, the ancestral home of the Sackville family in Kent.  

Alcoholic Beverage Service at the Henfield Hall.

There have been some changes to the terms and conditions associated with hire of the Henfield hall. These changes mean that societies and clubs that make use of the catering resources must now use the hall’s own bar facilities. Hall users are no longer able to offer their own bar services. The new rules state:-

“Alcohol may only be consumed on the premises via

·       The Henfield Hall Bar sales

·       When the Bar is not included individuals may bring their own alcohol for their own consumption

The Arts Society Welwyn Garden visit to Saffron Walden

Towards the end of August a group of our members enjoyed an excellent coach trip to Saffron Walden. 

In the morning we visited the fascinating Fry Art Gallery, where we had a private visit with an interesting talk about the history of the gallery and its extensive art collection.

Following the art gallery our coach transported us to the spectacular early 17th century mansion Audley End. Here, in glorious sunshine, we had the opportunity to explore the lovely gardens and the fascinating house.
